It’s been a few years since I concluded my work on the transformation of the BT headquarters at St Paul’s during my time at Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF). Looking back on the three years I spent on this project, I’m reminded not only of the building’s evolution, but also of how much it shaped my own understanding of adaptive reuse, technical coordination and architectural resilience within complex urban environments.
Projects of this scale rarely involve straightforward refurbishment. Existing commercial buildings — particularly those occupying prominent sites within central London — often contain decades of layered interventions, servicing constraints and evolving regulatory obligations. The process of transforming them requires careful coordination between design teams, consultants, contractors and planning authorities from the earliest stages onward.
